MIT Heat Island Research Could Lower The Global Warming
MIT Researchers found that well-planned cities can reduce the heat that could affect global warming. According to the Senior Research Scientist Roland Pellenq, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering Franz Josef Ulm, Research Assistant Jacob Sobstyl, senior research scientist M. J. Abdolhosseini Qomi; Some cities like New York and Chicago which are laid out on precise grid-like atoms in a crystal when cities like Boston and London are arranged more chaotically like disordered atoms in a liquid or glass. By using the theory researchers found that crystalline cities like New York and Chicago had far greater buildup for heat compared to the cities like Boston and London did the glass-like examples.
As per the publication, the heat island effect has been known for ages and it is a result of building materials of the urban builds. Materials like concrete and asphalt absorb heat in the day as much as possible and release them to the environment in the night time which can lead to high temperature in some areas recorded as 10 degrees Fahrenheit at night. Team of researches used mathematical models that were developed to analyze atomic structures in materials provide a useful tool that leads the team to a straightforward way to create a formula that describes the way a city's design and planning would affect the heat island effect.
The researchers found that the state of Florida's urban heat island effects to 400 Million USD excess air conditioning cost which can reduce by proper planning and by using proper building materials.
