Toyota to Build 50% cheap electric motors by using only 50% rare metals

Neodymium Reduced Magnet Performance

Neodymium Reduced Magnet Performance by Toyota

Toyota, the world's leading car manufacture and the leading sustainable innovator of the automobile industry builds a 50% cheaper electric motor by using 50% less natural metals in earth. Almost all the industry leaders who include Tesla and other electrical equipment manufacturers use a powerful magnet type commonly known as neodymium which is rare metal on earth and expensive. Many countries including Norway promoting Co2 emission to be lowered with the time. The only thing which is possible is by introducing more electric drive vehicles and more hydrogen-powered vehicles to the roads. Neodymium is the most commonly used metal type on an electric motor which is there in the electric drive vehicles which are manufactured in the factories from Japan to Silicon Valley.

The newest electric motor is the engineering of neodymium reduced and heat resistant magnets. And this motor doesn't use any terbium (Tb) or dysprosium (Dy) which are declared as critical metals. As Toyota states a considerable percentage of neodymium magnets have been replaced using cheap and low-cost metals commonly known as lanthanum (La) and cerium (Ce). To use neodymium as the primary metal in the electrical motor is because they do contain an important feature of maintaining high coercivity which is the ability to maintain magnetization and heat resistance.

The problem Toyota needed to address was the 30% magnets that are used in magnets are rare metals because when the magnets put inside of a motor and plug into an electric drive vehicle it definitely generates more heat than usual from inside of the component and the outside environmental factors. Due to environmental impact and the rapidly increasing demand for electric drive vehicles, Toyota motivated to find alternative solutions to reduce what's needed in the build. Eventually, it will make an impact on the cheaper electric drive vehicles.

Toyota has implemented three engineering concepts in these magnets which use less rare metals. Grain Refinement of Magnets by retaining high coercivity at high-temperature levels through the reduction of the size of the magnet grains to one-tenth (1/10) or less than conventional neodymium magnets. Toyota has implemented a two-layered high-performance grain surface which makes the concept possible to use less neodymium in magnets by keeping efficient and performance at a high level. Toyota mixed and made the alloy by mixing with neodymium with 1:3 (La: Ce) to maintain the correct amount of properties that are there in the magnets manufactured by rare earth metals.
